OUR HISTORY

Sanctuary Trust was formerly known as Caring Hands and was set up in 2011 at a former guest house in St. Aubin.

The original founders, a group of committed Christians and concerned parishioners in St. Brelade, were troubled by the lack of anywhere in the island that could be identified as a sanctuary for men facing major crises in their lives.

Whilst acknowledging the excellent work undertaken by other charities working with the homeless, the founders felt that something more encompassing was needed for those whose issues were more than just homelessness. The early days were helped by the support of the churches of St. Brelade, which continue to be key sponsors in the work of the Trust and generous individuals who understood the need for such a service.

COLIN TAYLOR – FOUNDER

Colin Taylor set up the Sanctuary Trust in 2011 to provide shelter and support for homeless and isolated men due to his concern that not enough was being done to help people who had fallen through the cracks.

In 2015 he was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl.

WHERE WE DO IT

SANCTUARY HOUSE

Located in the heart of St Aubins village, Sanctuary house is the main hub of the Trust and was its first property . This is where residents one will start their journey with Sanctuary Trust. The property it is a former guest-house and provides accommodation for ten men on a full time basis.

Sanctuary House is staffed 24 hours a day and is home to the main office for the organisation. It is here that the residents will be assessed and where their initial problems will be discussed and addressed and is where the residents can benefit from the counselling services provided by the Trust. Once the residents are able to do so they will either move to our second property, Sanctuary Lodge or on to their own accommodation.

SANCTUARY LODGE

This is our second property, located at Beaumont and is an extension of the L’Hermitage development. Its existence is only possible due to the incredible generosity of a local developer, to whom we are extremely grateful.

The Lodge provides accommodation to 14 men and is a much more independent facility, developed with the aim of being a ‘halfway house’, to assist residents eventually returning to independent accommodation within wider society. The house does not have a permanent staff presence although there is regular staff input but the men are free to come and go as they please – historically the residents here will be working or involved in schemes that may lead to paid employment.

No time limit is set for men in either of the house managed by Sanctuary Trust. Each man will have his own individual problems and issues and initial assessments will determine the level of support necessary. Inevitably some will take longer than others but all residents know that Sanctuary Trust does not provide lasting, permanent accommodation and the outcome being worked towards is independent accommodation in a community setting. But after men have left, support can and does continue.

SLEEP OUT FOR SANCTUARY TRUST
20 NOVEMBER 2021

“Sleep Out for Sanctuary Trust is back and we would be delighted if you joined us for a fundraising night to remember. Due to the disappointment of having to cancel last year’s event, we are really hoping that Sleep Out 2021 will be fully supported by the community so that, together, we can raise some much needed funds for our homeless..

This year’s event will take place on Saturday 20th November in Pier Road car park and although it won’t be the most comfortable night you’ve ever spent it will be one of the most memorable..

So help us raise awareness and funds for some of the most vulnerable people in our community by signing up with friends, family or colleagues. We really hope to attract all ages and we are delighted that students from Victoria College will be getting involved this year by providing us with hot soup to keep us warm.

We will have buskers on site and breakfast rolls with hot tea and coffee in the morning.
